This Contemporary West African class uses traditional West African techniques from Guinea and Senegal. As well as finding influence from Horton, Limon and Humphrey techniques. Both the traditional and contemporary forms are anchored in the movement and play of rhythm. We expand through spirals and find our range through risk. The hope is for those who join to explore a range of movements that diversify our palettes. In this space we are valuing our native languages that exist in our bodies and inviting new linguistics into our realm.
*Attendees are encouraged to mask and/or test prior to class.

Mawu Ama Ma’at G. Oyesii (they/them) is a Brooklyn native currently residing in Philadelphia. As a black, queer, caribbean and multi hyphenate artist their movement practice and creation space is about food– sustenance, ceremony and storytelling. They are a graduate of Georgian Court University (BA) and Temple University (MFA). They have had opportunities to work and learn from Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Dr. Kariamu Welsh and Lela Aisha Jones. They were mentored by Silvana Cardell as a student and company member touring nationally and internationally with Cardell Dance Theater. They are founder and director of Ma’at Works Dance Collective, a project based dance collective interested in “finding ceremony”. Ceremony being the punctuation that queers, ciphers and colors the worlds they innovate. Their work is sensory and human and colloquial. Currently, they are an adjunct professor at Bryn Mawr College empowered by their roles as educator and storyteller. Learn more about Mawu here, mawuniverse.com.
